You: If by meaning you refer to one's purpose in continuing existence, then it can be love, desire to help others, enjoyment of living or any number of other things. It does not have to be hope that things will get better, or even that they will stay the same. There is no reason that this "meaning" that you insist exists must have anything to do with hope.
