You: That is a reasonably good argument that there had to be a prime mover, but that prime mover did not have to be God. You insist that our current state of affairs exists only because God put it into motion many years ago. Let me give you an interesting, if somewhat heady, proof that God could not have caused all states of affairs and therefore need not necessarily have caused ours.

If God is all powerful, then we could say that his will is effective. It is impossible for God's effectiveness of will to have been caused by him, because that implies that there was a time that his will was not effective and during that time he could not have caused anything, let alone the effectiveness of his will. From this we can see that there is at least one state of affairs not caused by God and if you are willing to admit one, why not admit that the state of the universe's existence is it?

Aaron: That was truly a dazzling display of rhetoric, but it is fatally flawed. God's effectiveness of will exists necessarily, but the universe could not exist at all without something overseeing its operation. The laws of nature could not exist necessarily because they show signs of divine guidance. Let me elaborate.
