You: But there was a time — before the "big bang" — when there was nothing.

Aaron: That does not make any sense. The universe is made of dependent things. You and I could not exist without the Earth, the Earth could not exist without the sun, the sun could not exist without its fuel, there is nothing which is whole unto itself. Because nothing can be more than the sum of its parts, and because the universe is made up of dependent things, the universe itself must be dependent on something. For that reason there could have never been a nothing. Even your "big bang" — if it occurred at all — had to have been set in motion by something independent.

How do you respond?

  1. Quantum mechanics disagrees with you. Go
  2. People are dependent on each other for company, but humanity needs nobody else for company. Go
  3. Because the universe is everything, there is nothing left for it to be dependent on. Go
